Annex Chess Club is honoured to host the 2024 Ontario Open on behalf of the Ontario Chess Association.

The Ontario Open is a Victoria Day institution! Here are the details.

When: Sat. May 18 through Mon. May 20, 2024, rounds at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. daily (final round 3:00 p.m. Monday);

Where: St. Casimir's Parish Hall, 156 Roncesvalles Avenue, Toronto, M6R 2L4

Format: Six-round Swiss tournament

Sections: Crown, U2200, U1800, U1400 based on CFC rating. If CFC rating is not available, FIDE ratings will be taken into consideration. Other ratings may be taken into consideration only if neither CFC nor FIDE ratings are available. Pre-registered list for Crown, U2200, U1800, and U1400.

Rating: all sections CFC-rated. Crown, U2200, and U1800 sections FIDE-rated. All players must have a valid CFC membership or pay a CFC single tournament fee ($20) to participate.

Pairings: CFC ratings used to determine starting rank and pairings for all sections.

Play-up: Players may play up a section for $20 if within 100 points of the next section. Play-up eligibility for U1800 determined by CFC ratings only. Play-up eligibility for U2200 determined by best of CFC and FIDE ratings.

Time control: 90 min. + 30 sec. increment from move 1.

Capacity: 250

Cost: $110 regular admission. $20 discount for Early Bird, ACC member, Junior (U16) or Senior (60+), to a maximum discount of $40. After May 14, add $20.

Prize fund: $7000 based on 250 entrants. Guaranteed top prize $1500. Prizes for top three in each section, top woman, top junior (U16), top senior (over 60), top ACC member.

We are pleased to announce the Michael Schleifer Brilliancy Prize: $500 for a brilliant game! Thank you to the Schleifer family for this award. (Players must submit PGNs to for consideration.)

Broadcast: We will be broadcasting the top boards on and on lichess with a 15-minute delay.
