Go from zero to sixty in just four classes!

Our kids' beginner classes young people who have no prior knowledge of chess. (If you are familiar enough with the game that you know terms like fork, pin, stalemate and perpetual check, then you should consider our intermediate course.)

Our instructor, Sue Foster, will teach students the basics of the game, from piece movements and board coordinates through simple tactics and strategic considerations.

Classes are on Monday evenings from 6:15 until 7:15, and usually involve about 30 minutes of instruction followed by 30 minutes of supervised game play. Believe it or not, you'll be playing chess very soon!

ACC students are also welcome to borrow books from the ACC library and play in our casual play area after class.

Instructor: Sue Foster

You are welcome to take a single class as a drop-in, but we do recommend that all students take the entire four-week course.

In the first two sessions you will learn: the rules of chess including piece movement, castling and other special moves, piece values, elementary mates, and basic opening principles.

The final two weeks focus on useful topics including: the middlegame, tactics, strategy and endgames.

On completion of this course, you will be ready to take part in our intermediate classes.

ACC members can take this course at a significant discount.
