Annex Chess Club was founded in 2010 by Ted Winick. Ever since the start we have lived by our motto: Chess For Everyone!

Over the years our club has grown to have a robust membership of enthusiastic chess players of all ages and skill levels.

ACC started its days at 918 Bathurst, but moved briefly to Bloor and Major in 2018.

Of course, the club closed for over-the-board play in 2020, but quickly pivoted to online chess tournaments and lessons.

ACC moved back to 918 Bathurst in 2021, and re-opened its door for casual, distanced play only for several month, until returning to tournament play later that year.

Over the years, Annex Chess Club has become an increasingly important part of the Toronto chess scene. ACC frequently runs major chess tournaments such as the Ontario Open, Toronto Open, Toronto Closed, Toronto Blitz Championship and more, on behalf of organizations like the Greater Toronto Chess League and the Ontario Chess Association.

In 2018 the club established the Jacques Katz Spirit of Chess Award, given annually to a person who has made great contributions to the chess scene in Toronto and beyond. Past recipients include Alex Fereirra (arbiter and organizer at Hart House Chess Club), IM Michael Barron (president of the Greater Toronto Chess League), and ACC's own Ted Winick.

In 2023 we co-hosted the Canadian Transnational (along with Montreal's Maplewood Chess Club), one of the strongest tournaments ever held on Canadian soil, and in 2024 ACC served as a local partner to FIDE when the 2024 Candidates Tournament was held in Toronto.

In 2025 ACC hosted the Canadian Closed on behalf of the Chess Federation of Canada, marking the first time we hosted a national event.

Annex Chess Club enjoys good relationships with many other chess clubs in the Greater Toronto Area, and with its two sister organizations, Chess Institute of Canada and National Chess Camp, both of which were also founded by Ted Winick.
