Weekly Tournaments

Our main activity at Annex Chess Club is our weekly tournaments. We run a continuing series of five-round tournaments, with one round per week.

Our tournament rounds start at 7:30 p.m., and have a time control of 90+30 (each player starts with ninety minutes on their clock and have thirty seconds added to their clock on the completion of each move). Games typically last between two and four hours.

After a game is completed, players often go to the skittles (casual play) room to analyze and discuss their games.

Our tournaments are CFC-rated, which means that all games played contribute to a players’ official rating. This also means that that all tournament players must have a current Chess Federation of Canada (CFC) membership, as CFC is the rating body in Canada. CFC memberships cost $48 per year. The rating fee for a single tournament is $20. Our Crown section is also FIDE-rated.

Our tournaments have three sections (based on playing strength): Crown (over 1800), Under 1800, and Under 1400. New players are almost always placed in the U1400 section. Players within 100 points of the rating floor of the next section may play up a section on request (i.e., a player rated 1335 will be placed in the U1400 section, but may play up and be placed in the U1800 section on request.)

We have a detailed Tournament FAQ for new players. Come join us and play some chess!
