Opening Ceremonies at the 2011 Candidates Matches in Kazan

The Candidates Matches opened May 3 in Kazan, Russia. The winner of these knockout matches will challenge Viswanathan Anand for the World Chess Championship in a 12-game match in 2012.

Two of the quarter-final matches ended May 9 with rapid and blitz tie breaks, where Alexander Grischuk and Vladimir Kramnik, prevailed, to play each other in the semi-finals. The other semi-final match had Gata Kamsky facing Boris Gelfand.

Both semi-final matches went to blitz tie-break on May 16, and Israeli Boris Gelfand faced Russian Alexander Grischuk in the finals. After five draws, Gelfand won game 6 to become the new contender for the chess crown.
