Annex Chess Club – Patio Weather Swiss Tournament
Bring on the patio weather! In honour of all the great patios gearing up for patio season, Annex Chess Club is launching our first annual ACC Patio Weather Swiss.
The tournament finished on June 11.
Round 5 (June 11)
After leading the U1500 section the whole way through, Shabnam Abbarin fell in the last round to Milan Cvetkovic, who is becoming a bit of a nemesis for her. In the end, the two finished tied with young Nicole Birarov for the lead at 4.0/5. But on tie-break, Shabnam is still the winner!
In the U1900 section, Hayk Oganesyan powered through with a perfect 5.0/5, finishing a full point and a half ahead of his closest section rivals. Congratulations, Hayk!
And in the top section, after a tight race, one player finished ahead of the rest – undefeated and leading by a full point at 4.0/5. Congratulations, Zehn Nasir, you are the inaugural ACC Patio Weather Swiss champion!

See full standings, below (W = win; L = loss; D = draw; H = half-point bye; U = zero-point bye; X = forfeit win; F = forfeit loss).
We have some exciting events coming up the next couple of weeks. Then our next regular Swiss starts July 9 at 7:30 pm.

Round 1 (May 7)
First-round mismatches saw numerous instances of the higher-rated player crushing the underdog, but also a couple of upsets. Young Jiaxin Liu defeated Adie Todd after Adie blundered into a classic knight fork; and Bill Thornton managed to take down Greg Beal.
Round 2 (May 14)
After two rounds, the pack of leaders is shrinking in each section. In the top section, nobody is perfect, but there’s a four-way tie at one and a half points. Omid Nemati, who won the U1900 section last tournament (but got crushed last week in the top section) is now proving he deserves the promotion: he won his Round-2 game against Carlos Romero.
In the middle section, there’s a three-way tie at two points. Among the leaders is ten-year-old Jiaxin Liu, who answered her upset win in Round 1 with another win in Round 2 – this time over Peter McNelly, who was playing his first rated game after a seven-year hiatus.
Finally, in the bottom section, there’s a four-way tie at two points. Notably, the lead pack includes Jean-Marc David. He took a break from club tournaments for a while, but is evidently back with a vengeance in this one.
Round 3 (May 28)
After a week off for the Victoria Day long weekend, the ACC Patio Swiss is back in action!
While pairs of leaders are breaking out of the pack in the bottom two sections, there’s tough competition in the top group – and in fact the leader pack is growing: Wajdy Shebetah and Geordie Derraugh drew, Dan Wiebe took a bye, and two new tournament entries (Pavel Peev and Zehn Nasir) powered up to the leader group with a win apiece – all five players have 2.0/3.
In the middle (U1900) section, two youngsters are tied for the lead. Dora (Jiaxin) Liu and Hayk Oganesyan both still have perfect scores, at 3.0/3. They are due to face each other next round.
In the bottom (U1500) section, there’s a tie between Shabnam Abbarin (and she’s doing great work off the board as well, volunteering at the front desk) and newcomer, Vinorth Vigneswaramoorthy – both have perfect 3.0/3 scores. They too should face off next round.
Round 4 (June 4)
The log jam at the top of the Premier section is settling a little, and just three players remain tied for the lead. Wajdy Shebetah, Pavel Peev, and Zehn Nasir won this round, and share the lead at 3.0/4.
In the middle (U1900) section, Hayk Oganesyan defeated Dora Liu, and he goes into the last round with a perfect score of 4.0/4.
Finally, Shabnam Abbarin is not only taking care of the front desk, but she’s taking care of all comers in the U1500 section, still unstoppable with a perfect 4.0/4 record going into the last round.
