Chess Academy wins 2012 GTCL Cup

Chess Academy keeps the GTCL Cup for another year

The 2012 GTCL Cup took place on June 25, 2012 at Annex Chess Club, Toronto.

Twelve teams took part, competing for prizes in two categories, the traditional Club Championship (elite teams representing a chess club in the GTA) and a new Open Competition category (pickup teams with an average rating under 1800). Check the GTCL Cup announcement page for tournament format, etc.

Winning Teams

The Club Championship was won – once again – by the Chess Academy, while the Open Competition ended in a tie between Hamilton and the CCC Commandos – both on match points and on board points. The decision was to award the prize to the CCC Commandos since the players are GTCL members. Check the complete results on the 2012 GTCL Cup Teams Results cross-table.

The CCC Commandos were the top Open Competition (U1800) team

Rapid Team Chess Championship – June 25

Toronto’s Rapid Team Chess Competition is coming…

The GTCL Cup is Monday June 25 at Annex Chess Club

The GTCL Cup is Toronto’s Annual Rapid Team Chess Championship. For this year’s Cup, we’re welcoming teams in two categories:

Club Championship Teams
Each chess club in Toronto is entitled to enter one official club team in the championship. This team consists of four players (plus an alternate) who represent the club. Clubs are entitled to enlist their strongest players, so there is no rating cap in this category. The winning Club Championship team will win the 2012 Cup for their club, and will receive trophies from the GTCL.

Open Competition Teams
This category is open to any four players (plus one alternate) who want to play together on a team, but subject to a rating cap: the average rating of the top four players must be under 1800. This ensures parity among the various “pick up” teams. The best team in this Open Competition category will win the 2012 Cup for their team, and will also receive trophies from the GTCL.

Results

Check tournament results on the Results page.

Here are the tournament details:

Format: 5-round Swiss (team vs. team) in a single section – club-championship and pick-up teams play together

Round Times: Round 1 starts at 7:30 pm sharp; subsequent rounds to begin every 45 minutes; event expected to be over by 11:30 pm

Time Control: G/15’+5″ (15 minutes per player, plus a 5-second-per-move increment from move 1)

Registration: On-site, between 6:30 pm and 7 pm; email notification is also appreciated

Entry Fee: $5 per player or $20 per team (free for ACC members)

CFC-Rated: The event is to be CFC quick-rated, so players must be CFC members in good standing

Single Players: If you haven’t got a team, come along anyway – we’ll be putting teams together on-site

Award-winning Toronto Chess Club!

Annex Chess Club recognized at GTCL AGM

At Saturday’s annual general meeting of the Greater Toronto Chess League (GTCL), report after report recognized the emergence this year of the Annex Chess Club (ACC) as a remarkable positive development in the Toronto chess scene.

Accordingly, this year’s GTCL awards were presented to my friend Yakos Spiliotopoulos (ACC club manager) and to me Marcus Wilker (ACC communications director) for our work in getting this fantastic downtown chess club up and running so successfully.

In turn, Yakos and I would like to thank all our club members and all those who have supported Toronto chess through our club. Your help is much appreciated. Quite obviously, we couldn’t have done this without all of you!

Yakos Spiliotopoulos and Marcus Wilker

Toronto Premier League

Club versus club – four on four

Matches start January 9, 2012 @ 7:30 pm

Final Results (Jan 23)

Chess Academy +2-0=1 (5 points)
Knights of Chess +2-1=0 (4 points)
Willowdale Chess Club +1-1=1 (3 points)
Annex Club +0-3=0 (0 points)

Congratulations to the Chess Academy of Canada! – view photos

Round One (Jan 9)

Academy – Willowdale 2:2
Roman Sapozhnikov – Michael Barron 1:0
Konstantin Semianiuk – Michael Kimelman 0:1
Michael Song – Dmitry Chernik 1/2
David Itkin – Alexander Strugach 1/2

Knights – Annex 3:1
Victor Plotkin – Michael Humphreys 1:0
Vladimir Birarov – Rolando Renteria 1/2
Mike Ivanov – David Southam 1/2
Mark Plotkin – Pavel Peev 1:0

With Pavel Peev’s game looking lost, David Southam’s drawn, and Rolando’s game looking drawish, we were all hoping for a win on board one to even the score. Michael Humphreys looked like he had an edge on the board and he certainly had a huge edge on the clock. But in the end, Victor Plotkin prevailed.

White: Plotkin, Victor (2374)
Black: Humphreys, Michael (2322)

Round Two (Jan 16)

Annex – Academy 1:3
Michael Humphreys – Roman Sapozhnikov 0:1
Rolando Renteria – Konstantin Semianiuk 0:1
David Southam – James Fu 1:0
Wajdy Shebetah – David Itkin 0:1

Knights – Willowdale 3:1
David Cummings – Michael Kleinman 1/2
Vladimir Birarov – Michael Barron 1/2
Razvan Preotu – Michael Kimelman 1:0
Mike Ivanov – Dmitry Chernik 1:0

Michael Humphreys had an interesting game with Roman Sapozhnikov, and he must have been winning at some point. It stayed complicated as both players faced time trouble, and in the end Roman won. So Annex suffered a second team loss.

Team records (after 2 rounds)

Knights of Chess +2-0=0 (4 points)
Chess Academy +1-0=1 (3)
Willowdale Chess Club +0-1=1 (1)
Annex Chess Club +0-2=0 (0)

But let’s focus on the positive: here’s Dave Southam’s win over James Fu.

Black: Fu, James (2178)

Round 3 (Jan 23)

Willowdale – Annex 2.5:1.5
Michael Kleinman – Michael Humphreys 1/2
Michael Barron – Rolando Renteria 1/2
Michael Kimelman – David Southam 1/2
Dmitry Chernik – Hugh Siddeley 1:0

These were exciting last-round matches! Academy beat the Knights to take over the lead in the final round. And Annex needed a win over Willowdale to climb out of the basement, and almost had it, too – until ACC team captain Hugh Siddely flagged in a winning position.

Here are the Final Team records (after 3 rounds):

Chess Academy +2-0=1 (5 points)
Knights of Chess +2-1=0 (4 points)
Willowdale Chess Club +1-1=1 (3 points)
Annex Club +0-3=0 (0 points)
