Back to School at Annex Chess Club!

We’ve got a new line of chess classes for players of all ages and playing stengths – with children’s classes on Monday nights, and adult classes on Thursday nights. Check course descriptions, below!

Bindi Cheng – Develop Your Opening Repertoire

The opening is the first battle of every chess game.  In this advanced level class, IM Bindi Cheng teaches from the experience of developing and refining his own opening repetoire.

The course explores how building a repertoire is connected to multiple aspects of the game: developing a style of play, learning from bad experiences, managing psychological factors, and preparing for specific opponents.

Bindi’s analysis will move quickly, so players who enrol for this course are recommended to have a chess rating of at least 1400.

  • The class takes place on Thursday evenings (7:00 to 8:00 pm) starting September 13
  • This seven-week course costs $140, with classes from September 13 to October 25

Guestlist advanced registration is now closed. Interested players may join late, simply by attending one of the classes, with cash or cheque to Annex Chess Club.

Adult Beginners Course

The ACC beginner course starts at the very beginning of the game, covering such topics as how the pieces move, how to check and checkmate, the relative value of the pieces, an introduction to strategy and tactics, and basic endgames.

Equipment is provided. No previous experience is necessary.

  • The class takes place on Thursday evenings (6:00 to 7:00 pm) starting September 13
  • This seven-week course costs $140 and runs from September 13 to October 25

Guestlist advanced registration is now closed. Interested players may join late, simply by attending one of the classes, with cash or cheque to Annex Chess Club.

Adult Intermediate Course

The ACC Intermediate Chess Course is designed for those who have either graduated from our Beginner Course or who already have a basic knowledge of the game. The Intermediate class will cover such topics as tactical themes (skewers, double checks, discovered attacks, zugzwang), opening, middlegame, and endgame strategy, pawn structures, and famous games. We will also play in-class games and analyze them together.

Equipment is provided. Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of chess.

  • The class takes place on Thursday evenings (6:00 to 7:00 pm) starting September 13
  • This seven-week course costs $140 and runs from September 13 to October 25
