Programme Description

Annex Chess Club’s adult chess classes are designed for a wide range of players, from teenagers to seniors, and from absolute beginner level through to an intermediate level ready for tournament play.

Graduates of our programme will be fluent in chess notation; will be introduced to the full range of tactical skills and to opening, middlegame, and endgame theory; will be capable of in-depth analysis of their own and others’ games; and will be knowledgeable of the range of resources that are available to continue to improve their games after the class finishes.

ACC Classes are led by Chess Institute of Canada chess instructors.

[Note: We also offer classes for children – see our children’s chess programme.]

Adult Chess Classes

Beginner: This four-week class starts at the very beginning of the game, covering such topics as how the pieces move, how to check and checkmate, the relative value of the pieces, an introduction to strategy and tactics, and basic endgames. Keith will get you ready to start playing, and up to speed to join the Intermediate group.

Intermediate: This six-week class is designed for those who have either graduated from the Beginner course or who already have a basic knowledge of the game. The Intermediate class will cover such topics as tactical themes (skewers, double checks, discovered attacks, zugzwang), opening, middlegame, and endgame strategy, pawn structures, and famous games. We will also play in-class games and analyze them together. Keith adapts his instruction to the group’s needs and provides additional resources so you have everything you need for self-study and tournament preparation.

Advanced: This seven-week class is for adults who already have some competitive tournament experience and are looking for practical advice to improve their game. Each class explores a particular area of chess play and FM Michael Humphreys offers practical advice from his years as a master-level chess player and coach.

    1. Hi, Siobhán. We have a new session November 7. Even if it’s billed as an intermediate class, you should definitely come check it out!

  1. I left a fb comment under the fb description of upcoming classes, but right now don’t see where to register Timothy Bahry for the intermediate adult classes starting this Monday. Thanks!

        1. We don’t offer private lessons at the club but many of our instructors also teach privately. Please feel free to make your own arrangements and you are welcome to email us if you’d like contact information.

  2. Hey,

Are there going to be any beginner classes starting soon? I know almost nothing about chess, but I would really like to learn.

    1. We’d love to run a beginner class in January! We just need three or four interested beginners to run the program. Thanks for your interest, Andrew. We’ll let you know.

    1. Hi Riman,

One thing we do have is a few of our chess lectures posted on our website.

(You can see from the full list that they’re not as frequent as they used to be, but we’re working on bringing them back in 2017!)

    1. Our classes take a break for the summer. You’re welcome to come out on Mondays from now to June 12. You could join the Women’s Class at 7:20 (starting this week), or the Beginner Class at 8:15 (which will start this week if there is sufficient interest). Or you could join us in the Fall.

    1. Hi Debbie,

Yes, we have adult beginner and intermediate classes running at 7:15 on Mondays. Feel free to join in next week!

  3. Hi King,
I have a teen who is interested in Intermediate classes. Is it too late to join? If yes, are there drop in opportunities?

    1. Hi Lisa,

Teens are welcome to join the adult classes, either for a full 7-week course or on a drop-in basis.
And no, it’s not too late to join!

    1. Hi Jess,
We have one more term of kids’ classes running to June, but we wrapped up our adult classes last week. There’ll be new adult classes, including a beginner class, starting in September. Meanwhile, over the summer, several of our new adult players are going to try out our casual and tournament sections.

  4. Hi there, as a busy corporate drone and going to school part time, is there possibility for me to do an online class vai or + using phone chat? The instructor can show me how to improve my chess as I am stuck making immense blunders in my positions and very inconsistent play. Money can be transferred via etransfer to the instructor. Please let me know

  5. Hey there, I’m looking around for advanced/expert lessons in Toronto. I’ve been playing around 1800-2000 CFC for 20 years and I’d like to get to 2200+
Just wondering if there was anyone around that could help me getting there.
