New Fall Chess Classes are starting up!

Looking for something new to do? Why not stretch your mental muscles with some chess lessons!

Sign up for a chess class

Annex Chess Club in downtown Toronto has evening Live Online chess classes for adults and children – for absolute beginners or for those who want to take their game to the next level.

Register online for fall classes. Monday night Kids classes are available at beginner, intermediate, or advanced levels, starting November 9.

Adult beginners can try a 2-week adult beginner class with Keith, starting December 14. This will give you some techniques and principles for making good moves in the opening, middlegame and endgame.

Or if chess is completely new to you, Keith can bring you up to speed with an intro to chess on December 7. This takes you, in one lesson, right from the start with how the pieces move and how to set up the board, through all the rules of the game, how to check and checkmate, and even a few ideas for getting your game off to a good start.

If you’re familiar with basic opening, middlegame, and endgame principles, but you’re looking to go a bit deeper, try a 5-week intermediate class with Peter. There’s one starting November 23, and there’ll be a continuation with new topics starting in January.

Or for tournament players looking to improve, FM Michael Humphreys is teaching a high-level Thursday night adult advanced course, starting November 12. This time around, the focus is on understanding pawn structures:

  • Nov 12 – Isolated Queen Pawn Positions Part 1
  • Nov 19 – Isolated Queen Pawn Positions Part 2
  • Nov 26 – The Carlsbad Structure
  • Dec 3 – King’s Indian and Ruy Lopez Structures Part 1
  • Dec 10 – King’s Indian and Ruy Lopez Structures Part 2
  • Dec 17 – The Boleslavsky Structure

There is a class for everyone!

  1. Hi there. I just missed the November beginner session and I’m very interested to know when the next session will be. I would really love to start learning chess as my 7 year old is starting lessons this week. Thanks!

    1. Hi Karie Ann,

Our January Adult Class schedule is now posted here –

If you want a complete right-from-the-beginning class, you could start with the Intro to Chess course, or if you already know the basics, like how the pieces move, you could start with the Adult Beginners class.

  2. Do you have 2020 classes starting in January? I was a realatively proficient player in the seventies, but have not played since. I forget all of the strategies. Also, do you recommend a book that is good for someone getting back into the games.
