  1. I’d love to play in this event. Is there any way that the organizers or arbiter would consider changing the time control to Game/120 with 30 increments from move 1, like the recent 2015 Hart House Holidays Open? If the faster time control mentioned in the flyer for the 2016 Ontario Open is out of consideration for the parents of younger participants, then perhaps my requested time control could just be put in effect for the (FIDE rated) Open and U2200 sections? There are so many tournaments for those who prefer the faster time controls, and so few for those of us who want to be just a little less rushed.

  2. Hi Jeff,

We decided to go with the 90m+30s time control based on feedback at previous events, specifically regarding the difficulty with two rounds per day and longer games. While I appreciate your point, and would be interested in hearing feedback from others if they feel the same way, we’ve already begun to advertise using this time control, so for this event it will remain the same.

  3. Hi, is this a fide rated event? I am not rated yet and would like to start the process with this tournament if possible

  4. Hi,

I was just wondering whether there’d be any additional costs to registering for this tournament. I don’t have an active CFC membership….would I need to purchase one separately? If so, how would I go about it, and how much would it cost?

Also, I think my rating on the CFC website is about 1500; however I think I’m quite a bit stronger than that now (last played a tournament a few years back). Which rating section section would I register for?

    1. Hi Bogdan,

In the majority of cases, we don’t allow people to play up sections outside of the allotted 100 point gap, but in your case I’d have to speak with you to determine your actual strength and if it’d make sense to pair you in a stronger section. For now, just register for the U1600 section, and we can discuss on site the section in which it’d be most appropriate to pair you.

  5. Hi there,

Have you considered adding under 1300 or under 1200 section?

Most of the tournaments in GTA do have this option and I was wondering why this is not available at the Ontario Open?

    Thank you,

  6. Hi Amon,

Yes, some tournaments in the city have begun to add a fifth section with varying degrees of success. I’ll have to get back to you. We’ve already advertised a prize fund and section breakdown, so I’d say it’s unlikely this will change for this event, but if we get a relatively large amount of U1600 registrations we’ll consider it.

    1. Thank you for your quick response, Tyler! Symbolic trophies for under 1300 (without cash prize) might be a good alternative option as well. No pressure, just a suggestion-:)

  7. Hello,

Although I’ve already registered for the tournament, it turns out that I won’t be able to play. Please remove me from the pre-reg list.

    Cheers,
    Michael Humphreys
