Let the Games Begin!
The Pan Am Games run July 10 to 26. The Parapan Am Games run August 7 to 15. Tickets are still available for many events.
In honour of the Toronto 2015 Games, Annex Chess Club is launching a “Let the Games Begin” chess tournament, running July 6 to August 10.
The tournament is divided into just two sections (Crown and U1700) as several of our members are away. Of note: Michael Humphreys, our Club Champion, is representing ACC in the Quebec Open and the Canadian Zonal, and Daniel Wiebe is representing Annex in Europe, playing in the Biel Masters and then in Barcelona.
Round 1 – July 6
Round 1 features a couple of upsets as Richard Morrison (1375) defeats Daniel Pirri (1553) and Bruce MacInnis (1146) defeats George Supol (1420).
Round 2 – July 13
Round 2 sees Dave Southam in sole possession of first place with 2.0/2. And there’s a big upset as Michael Sutton, “Mister 960,” takes down the top-rated player in the tournament, Josh Guo.
In the U1700 section, there’s a three-way tie for the lead as Hooshang Abbarin, Qi Zhou, and Tigran Ghazarian all have 2.0/2.
Round 3 – July 20
In the Crown section, Alex Ferreira and Jon Yu, two Hart House players who drew their head-to-head game in Round 2, win their Round 3 games against Sutton and Southam to tie for the lead with 2.5/3. Southam, Malakhovets, Zotkin, and Siddeley are just a half point out at 2.0/3.
In the U1700, Hooshang Abbarin and Qi Zhou are tied for the lead with perfect 3.0/3 records. Ghazarian falls to Abbarin to drop behind by a point, while Mark Patton trails the leaders by just half a point with 2.5/3.
Round 4 – July 27
Atop the Crown section, Alex Ferreira gets a draw against Dave Southam, Jon Yu takes a half-point bye to go camping, and Hugh Siddeley joins the leaders by scoring a win against Sergey Malakhovets after he drops his queen in zeitnot. The three leaders all have 3.0/4, but with three wins Siddeley has the best tie-break, so the tournament could be his for the taking.
In the U1700 section, Qi Zhou is in clear first with 4.0/4 after a win against Hooshang Abbarin. Abbarin, MacInnis, Patton, and Supol are a point behind at 3.0/4.
The last round is in two weeks on August 10, and a new tournament starts August 17.
Round 5 – August 10
Our players return after a week off for Simcoe Day – some after playing in tournaments at the Kitchener Chess Festival. Notably, Max England placed first in the Canadian Amateur Over 1200, while Cindy Qiao placed 12th in the North American Junior Girls Championship.
Back at Annex, in the Crown section Jonathan Yu defeats Hugh Siddeley to take first place with 4.0/5, while Alex Ferreira draws Daniel Zotkin to take second with 3.5/5.
Meanwhile, in U1700, Qi Zhou finishes first with a perfect 5.0/5 record, while Bruce MacInnis also wins his game to finish clear second with 4.0/5.
Congratulations to Jon Yu for winning the tournament and Qi Zhou for winning the U1700 section!

Our next club tournament is the ACC Bobby Fischer Celebration Swiss, starting August 17. New players are welcome. Please arrive before 7:00 pm to register.
