ACC Growing Gardens Swiss

In honour of all the people cultivating their gardens across the city, Annex Chess Club’s “Growing Gardens” Swiss chess tournament runs May 11 to June 29.

Round 1 – May 11

First-round upsets include Arkadiy Ugodnikov (1854) with a win over Alex Ferreira (2098) in the Crown section, and Brendan Grady (1288) with a win over Daniel Pirri (1570) in the U1700 section. See complete results below.

Round 2 – May 25

Our AGM runs from 6:45 to 7:15 pm, and the games begin at 7:30 pm.

At the end of the night, there is a two-way tie for the lead in the Crown section as Josh Guo (with a win over Armand Jess Mendoza) and Bill Evans (with a win over Arkadiy Ugodnikov) each come through two rounds with perfect 2.0/2 records.

In the U1700 section, there is a three-way tie for first, as Ulli Diemer, Brendan Grady, and Richard Morrison all have perfect 2.0/2 scores.

Round 3 – June 1

There is an undisputed leader in each section now as Bill Evans leads the Crown section and Ulli Diemer leads the U1700 section. Both players have perfect 3.0/3 records.

Note that our regular tournament is taking a break June 8, but come play in the GTCL Cup!

Round 4 – June 15

Players come to help set up and start playing some casual games. Then, at 6:50 Omar Shah presents a chess lecture, “How and Why to Study Chess Classics”.

At 7:30, the tournament games begin.

At the end of the night, Ulli Diemer is holding onto his lead in the U1700 section (he now has 4.0/4), while Hugh Siddeley takes over the lead in the Crown section with a win over Bill Evans. (Hugh now has 3.5/4.) One more round to go! The final round is in two weeks, on June 29.

Round 5 – June 29

At 6:50 we’re treated to another free lecture by Omar Shah! Then at 7:30 the tournament games begin!

When the dust settles the winner in the Crown Section is Dave Southam, with 4.0/5, taking the tournament with a better tiebreak than Sergey Malakhovets, who also finished with 4.0/5.

The U1700 section is taken by Daniele Pirri, with 4.0/5, winning on tiebreak by beating Ulli Diemer in the last round.
