Goodbye Winter Swiss

Goodbye, Winter!

As February ends with wind-chill values of -30°C in the forecast, and March starts with a snowstorm, the only sign of spring is the longer days – slowly but surely sending winter on its way.

We love the winter here – mon pays c’est l’hiver and #WEAREWINTER – but enough is enough. After the polar vortex and the ice storm, the power outage and the stomach flu, we’re all ready to bid a fond farewell to the Old Man.

The ACC Goodbye Winter Swiss runs for five weeks, from March 3 to March 31, in three sections: Crown, Reserve A (U1900), and Reserve B (U1500). Rounds start at 7:30 pm each Monday night, and games are played at a time control of game/90′ with a 30″ increment.

Round One – March 3

The night gets off to a rocky start as we have troubles with SwissSys and the CFC data file. But back-up artibiter, Hugh Siddeley, pairs by hand with an Excel spreadsheet, and the games get started. Hugh’s going to get SwissSys ironed out for next week.

Round One in a Swiss usually sees some of the biggest rating mismatches of the tournament, and it’s fun to look for upset wins by the rating underdog. This time, in the Crown section, Daniel Zotkin gets the better of Hugh Siddeley, and Omar Shah scores a point against Wajdy Shebetah.

In the U1900 section, Julian Pulgarin, who scored 4.0/6 last tournament at ACC, is off to a good start with a win over Bob Armstrong, and Manuela Renteria wins her game against Ulli Diemer. Finally, in the U1500 section, Nick Mourtos wins on the top board against Jian Rashid – although it’s not clearly an upset as Jian’s 1700+ rating is provisional and based on only one game.

Round Two – March 10

With March Break happening in elementary and secondary schools in Toronto, there are a few bye requests – but we also have some new joiners: it’s nice to see Adie Todd re-joining the club, for example!

Our Club Championship trophies and medals have been engraved, so we have a medal ceremony before the round. Congratulations again to the medal winners from our ACC Championship, especially 2014 Club Champion Michael Humphreys!

After two rounds, Michael Humphreys and Daniel Zotkin are tied for first with 2.0/2 in the Crown section.

In the U1900 section, there’s a three-way tie for first. Chris Udrea, Julian Pulgarin, and Daniel Sirkovich all have 2.0/2.

Finally, in the U1500 section, there’s another three-way tie for the lead. George Supol, Armand Mendoza, and Adam Goldfarb all have 2.0/2.

Round Three – March 17

After an amply-attended 45-minute AGM, the St. Patrick’s Day round of the Goodbye Winter Swiss (let’s hope St. Patrick drives the snow from Toronto like he drove the snakes from Ireland) starts off sans a few players from the Crown section who qualify for the Toronto Closed. This GTA championship Round Robin runs simultaneously with our regular club tournaments for this and the next six Monday nights, not including Easter Monday April 21.

Now leading the remaining players in the top section is young Daniel Zotkin, with 2.5/3 after a draw against Zehn Nasir. Behind him, among the group with 2.0/3, is Canada’s top-rated under-10 player, Nicholas Vettese, who defends his title (as it were) with a win over under-10 rival, Harmony Zhu, from the black side of a Queen’s Indian.

The U1900 now has just a two-way tie between Chris Udrea, beating Daniel Sirkovich, and the clearly underrated Julian Pulgarin, beating Josep Sobrepere. Both players have a perfect 3.0/3 and a full-point lead over their closest rivals. Chris and Julian are due to face off in Round 4.

In U1500 play, Adam Goldfarb is leading with 3.0/3 after a win over Daniele Pirri, one of the newest club directors. Armand Mendoza and George Supol are half a point behind with 2.5/3 after drawing their game.

Round Four – March 24

In the Crown section, Nicholas Vettese defeats the leader, Daniel Zotkin, to take the lead by half a point, with 3.0/4.

In U1900, Chris Udrea defeats rival Julian Pulgarin to take sole possession of first. Chris is still perfect with 4.0/4.

In U1500, Adam Goldfarb is held to a draw by Dennis Li, allowing unrated Armand Mendoza, with a win over Howard Halim,to tie for the lead at 3.5/4.

Round Five – March 31

It’s an exciting finish in the Crown section as Daniel Zotkin wins his last round game against Jonathan Yu to take first, with 3.5/5, on tie-break over Joseph Bellissimo. Bellissimo helps Zotkin by beating Nicholas Vettese, who finishes a half-point behind at 3.0/5.

In 1900, Chris Udrea wins his last-round game against Marcus Wilker to take first place with a perfect score of 5.0/5, a full point-and-a-half ahead of his closest competitors, Jack Maguire and Daniel Sirkovich, who finish with 3.5.

In U1500, the top competitors play head-to-head last round, and Armand Mendoza takes first place with a win over Adam Goldfarb and finishes with 4.0/5. Richard Morrison ends just a half-point behind, at 3.5.

Our next regular club tournament, the Welcome Spring Swiss, starts April 7 at 7:30 pm. New players are welcome to join!
